One of the perks that handmade products offer consumers is the ability to be customized. Unfortunately often most new businesses in the excitement of getting new orders that use their creativity, they forget this very simple thing. What is that thing? Time.
Here are some steps on how to avoid overloading yourself and missing deadlines when selling custom or special order products
- Double the amount of time it takes to complete. If it takes 3 days say it will be ready in 5 to 7 days. This gives you room for life to happen and still deliver as expected.
- Be cautious in accepting expedited orders. Yes we can charge an extra fee for expedited orders. However if taking in an expedited order means that your existing orders will get delayed or you’ll miss the deadline, then it’s better to pass.
- Be realistic about your skills and what you can do. If you’ve never done it before, you’ll have a learning curve. Let the customer know. If they choose to still have you do the project, let them know it may take more time than normal. Set the expectations from the beginning.
